Field practice

Field safety, de-escalation, and documentation

Practical standards for documenting public interactions without baiting, blocking, escalating, or exposing private people.

The record is not worth a preventable injury

Choose a safe public vantage, keep an exit route, work with a second person when appropriate, and leave when the situation becomes unsafe. A dramatic clip is not a legal victory.

Separate observation from interference

Do not enter restricted areas, block access, follow people into private spaces, touch equipment, direct a crowd, or obstruct official duties. If asked to move, create distance and document the instruction from a lawful location.

Protect people who are not the story

Avoid publishing faces, names, license plates, screens, medical details, home addresses, or children’s identities unnecessarily. Blur or withhold material when privacy and safety outweigh the editorial value.
